Teen killed in crash with train in Rome


A teenager was killed and four others were injured tonight after a car was hit by a CSX train in Rome, Oneida County sheriff's officials said.

Sara D. Thaler, 17, of 203 Utica St. in Oriskany was killed after the 6:29 p.m. crash. She was a passenger in the car.

Megan Amble, 17, of 7695 Kilbourn Road in Rome, was driving the car on Reber Road as the westbound train approached, deputies said. Amble slowed as she approached the crossing, then drove over the tracks, into the train's path, deputies said. Amble was in critical condition tonight at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Also in the car were: Thomas Hoyte, 16, of 7900 New Floyd Road, Rome; Jessica Sosso, 18, of 5674 Martin St., Rome; and Marie Fournier, 16, of 210 Main St. in Oriskany. Hoyte was listed in critical condition at St. Elizabeth's Hospital; Sosso was listed in critical condition at University Hospital; and Fournier was listed in stable condition at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, deputies said.

No one in the train was injured. The train was driven by by Michael M. Zimpfer, 56, of Delmar, deputies said. The accident is under investigation.

Definition:
